Snapshots in June

On October 13, 1955, six poets, Kenneth Rexroth, Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Phil Whalen, Philip Lamantia, and Michael McClure read their work at the Six Gallery on Fillmore Street. Ginsberg read his epic beat poem Howl for the first time. The poem begins, “ I saw the best of minds of my generation destroyed by madness, starving hysterical naked, dragging themselves through the negro streets at dawn looking for an angry fix.” Beat writer Jack kerouac called the event “ the night of the birth of the San Francisco poetry Renaissance.” John Clellon had already coined the word “beat” in a November 1952 New York Times story:
More than mere weariness,. . . .[beat] implies the feeling of having been used, of being raw. It involves a sort of nakedness of mind, and, ultimately, of soul: a feeling of being reduced to the bedrock of consciousness. In short, it means being undramatically pushed against the wall of oneself.
