RON HENGGELER |
Yesterday morning I went to the San Francisco Transbay Terminal at First and Mission Streets.
The public had been invited to a one-time only historical walk-thru tour. The terminal opened in 1938 and will close next week. I went to photograph the famous building that will soon be demolished. In its place, a new Transbay Tower (58 stories taller than the Transamerica Pyramid) will be built over the next several years. This new tower, terminal and complex of high-rises will forever shift the weight of San Francisco’s skyline to the south of Market Street. To get a sense of this monumental transformation that will soon begin, peruse this web site, and definitely view the interactive videos. http://transbaycenter.org/
View the interactive videos in the Media Gallery http://transbaycenter.org/media-gallery/video-gallery. . . .
For a fun and brief history of the old terminal that is being demolished, view the video at the top of the page : Transbay Transit Center Project Presentation Narrated by Peter Coyote
(Footnote: For the past twenty years, the old terminal has been a safe haven for countless homeless people, many of them seniors, and many of them with severe mental illnesses. Where will they go?)
