Once a year, on the Fourth of July weekend, the Fairmont Hotel on Nob Hill replaces the array of international flags at its main entrance with only the Stars and Stripes. The one exception to this was right after 9-11. During that time, the distant flag (in the photo) on top of the Mark Hopkins, flew at half staff.
The Fairmont Hotel’s tradition of flying international flags at its main entrance began after World War 11. For 11 weeks (mid April-June 26th) in 1945, San Francisco was the Capital of the World. Delegates from over forty nations representing eighty percent of the world population came together to write the United Nations Charter. Many of these delegates stayed at the Fairmont Hotel. It was on San Francisco's very own Opera House stage where President Truman signed the United Nations Charter on June 26, 1945.
