Earlier this week, I was south of Market in the 1st and Mission Street area, photographing the construction of what is soon to become the tallest building west of the Mississippi. In 2010, the Transbay Terminal at 1st and Mission, (that had been built in the thirties during the Great Depression), was closed and torn down. Soon after its demolition, work commenced on preparing the grounds and several surrounding city blocks, for a new skyscraper that will soon dominate the San Francisco skyline. This new building now going up, was originally called the Transbay Tower. It is now to be called the Salesforce Tower. When the Salesforce Tower is finished, the focus and weight of San Francisco's iconic skyline will have shifted to the south of Market Street. Here is interesting video done in 2010 on the history of the Transbay Terminal. http://transbaycenter.org/media-gallery/video-gallery/the-transbay-transit-center-project-narrated-by-peter-coyote At the end of this collection of photos is a new video describing the Salesforce Tower.
