A photo of a soldier guarding California Street near Taylor Street on April 19th as the fire crept up Nob Hill. The Tobin Mansion is on the left, the Towne mansion is on the right. Tobin made his fortune by founding the Hibernia Bank in San Francisco. Alban Nelson Towne was General Superintendent of the Southern Pacific Railroad. The Huntington Hotel and Big 4 Restaurant stand at the site of the Tobin mansion that burned in 1906. Masonic Auditorium stands at the site of the Towne mansion.
