One of San Francisco's little known, yet very finest neighborhood treasures, is the Moraga Stairway at 16th Avenue. Adah Bakalinsky, who wrote "Stairway Walks in San Francisco" calls the stairway, the most beautiful in the United States. The steps are decorated with 163 separate mosaic panels. There are colorfully glazed tiles of birds, fish, plants and flowers, stars, the sun and the moon. Walking up the stairs, one is surrounded by the most exquisite views of the Avenues stretching down to the Pacific Ocean, the Marin Headlands to the far north, The Golden Gate Bridge, and now too, the tower of the new De Young Museum poking out from the expansive green carpet of Golden Gate Park. At sundown, the entire long stairway with its 163 risers of glazed mosaic tiles, reflects the low setting sunlight and turns into a spectactular display of brilliant heavenly golden white light. At the top of the Moraga Stairs is a roadway that leads to the Grandview Park stairs. If one follows these stairs to the top of the hill, the views from the top are breathtaking. The neighbors call this hill, Turtle Hill. For more on the Moraga Stairs visit this site: http://www.tiledsteps.org/ And be sure to visit the stairs.
