The South Tower

The south tower of the Golden Gate Bridge photographed from the approach leading up to Fort Point. The photo was taken just after sunset on September 18th 2006.

Right after I took this photo, two officers in a white Homeland Security vehicle, with red and blue lights flashing, stopped me. I was part of their sunset sweep to get everyone out of the area so they could close down the road for the night. What a sadly changed world we now live in. Until 9-11, one could visit Fort Point under the bridge at all hours of the night. What a magic place it was to watch the black silhouettes of massive towering ships quietly gliding under the illuminated span...to listen to the low bellowing and shrill cries of the many life saving fog horns that inhabit the dangerous dark waters...to smell the wet night salt air...or to loose one's whole self in the eternal clack clack clack clack of traffic on the roadway high above.
