History remade on Ocean Beach in San Francisco

In September 1902, “Buffalo Bill” Cody and his Wild West Show came to San Francisco. During their stay in San Francisco, Cody and his Native American performers from the show, lined up for a photograph that was taken on Ocean Beach near the Sutro Cliff House. Buffalo Bill, mounted on his horse Duke, appeared front-center in the photograph, with Indian members of the troupe lined up on either side of him.

In September 2008, Seattle-based installation artist Thom Ross re-created the historic photograph with life-size figures. The figures were cut out of 3/4 inch commercial plywood. They were sanded, primed, painted, and varnished then decorated with jewelry, fringe, feathers, bells and beads. The installation remained on display at Ocean Beach from September 5th to the15th. I’ve recently posted 250 photographs on my web site of the Thom Ross-Wild West installation on Ocean Beach.
