The Conservatory of Flowers in Golden Gate Park is the oldest public greenhouse in California. This splendid pre-earthquake Victorian glass house is virtually unchanged in spirit since its assembly in 1878. The E-shaped building composed of 16,800 panes of flat and formed glass is home to a unique and valuable botanical collection of 1,750 plants, including 700 of the known 1000 species of high altitude orchids. As part of its integrated Pest Management system, geckoes are utilized to help control pests. A fire in 1883 damaged the original structure and the $12,000 repair cost was funded mostly with a donation of $10,000 from one of the structures early benefactor’s Charles Crocker.
