Warriors on Ocean Beach

September 7th, 2008
Yesterday I received a surprise phone call from a co-worker Albert. He called to tell me about a very unusual sight near the Cliff House where he jogs and exercises every morning.
It was a large band of Indian warriors on horseback that was creating a sensation and stopping traffic at Ocean Beach. The colorful warriors are larger-than-life-size 3/4 inch plywood cut-out figures created by Seattle artist Thom Ross. In 1902, Buffalo Bill Cody and his traveling Wild West Show came to San Francisco. While they were here, a panoramic photograph was taken on Ocean Beach near the old Sutro Cliff House of Buffalo Bill and his Native American performers. Thom Ross has re-created the historic 1902 photograph with these painted and elaborately decorated figures. His installation will be on display until September 15th. If one visits the sight, be sure to go into the white tent nearby to see the large original photograph on loan from the Cody Museum in Wyoming. There’s a good chance you’ll also meet the artist Thom Ross.
