ASNA General Meeting
Monday, September 28, 2009

Chateau Tivoli, 1057 Steiner (between McAllister & Golden Gate)
Doors Open at 7:00 p.m.
Meeting starts at 7:30 p.m.
Guest Speaker: Ron Henggeler

ASNA board member Ron Henggeler is a waiter at the Big 4 Restaurant in the Huntington Hotel on Nob Hill. The Big 4 is filled with a priceless and rare collection of prints, photos, and ephemera relating to 19th century San Francisco, Nob Hill, and the transcontinental railroad.

Working at the Big 4 ties in perfectly with Ron's passion: he is a collector of any and every thing relating to San Francisco. He has over 3000 books on the City and the California Gold Rush. He is also a photographer and for the past 30 years, has been documenting San Francisco in photographs. Along with his never-ending photography, he is a collage artist and the four story sculptural bell tower he built out of historical objects is a local tourist attraction at Alamo Square. He's also, over the past thirty-five years, created over 1000 time-capsules using gallon glass jars (that martini olives and maraschino cherries come in).

Ron's PowerPoint presentation will cover his art, his photography, and his passionate love of San Francisco's history. Some of the jars from his collection will be on display, as well as the historic (13 ft long) 360º panoramic view of San Francisco that photographer Eadweard Muybridge took from the top of Nob Hill in 1878.

The Chateau Tivoli is an opulently restored Victorian mansion, located in San Francisco's historic Alamo Square district. It is one of the city's most charming bed and breakfast inns. Built in 1892 as a private home, and restored a century later, the Chateau Tivoli is a must-see. It’s filled with hand-carved woodwork, crystal chandeliers, period wallpapers, and oriental rugs. It is the epitome of San Francisco’s 19th century Victorian splendor and there is perhaps no inn more charming or more colorful than the city's most celebrated "painted lady", the Chateau Tivoli. Minivra on the front porch

Minerva (Etruscan: Menrva) was the Roman goddess of wisdom and sponsor of arts, trade, and strategy. She was born with weapons from the head of Jupiter. After impregnating the titaness Metis Jupiter recalled a prophecy that his own child would overthrow him. Fearing that their child would grow stronger than him and rule the Heavens in his place, Jupiter swallowed Metis whole. The titaness forged weapons and armor for her child while within the father-god, and the constant pounding and ringing gave him a headache. To relieve the pain, Vulcan used a hammer to split Jupiter's head and, from the cleft, Minerva emerged, whole, adult, and bearing her mother's weapons and armor. From the 2nd century BC onwards, the Romans equated her with the Greek goddess Athena. She was the virgin goddess of music, poetry, medicine, wisdom, commerce, weaving, crafts, and magic. She is often depicted with her sacred creature, an owl usually named as the "owl of Minerva", which symbolizes that she is connected to wisdom.
