The Wizard of Oz at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland
Pianist Peter Mintun recently sent me an email from New York City with news and a short video about the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. Here below is the email, the video, and some photos of the Paramount that I have taken.
Dear Ron,
My friend Matias Bombal just finished making this film tribute (see link below) to Oakland’s most beautiful movie theatre, the Paramount. December 30th is the Theatre’s 85th Anniversary and they are showing the Wizard of Oz (on real film, not digital). Tickets are $5!
I have been involved with the Paramount since I was a toddler in the 1950s, and eventually participated in the restoration (1973) and actually performed there several times. It is considered the first 100% authentic restoration of an art deco building in the U.S. (We had participation and consultation by the original architectural firm, seating company, carpet manufacturer, interior designer, Etc.) The cost of its restoration in 1973 was less than the cost of a contemporary co-op in Manhattan today.
