Photos of the artwork on the walls and doors along Clarion Alley in the Mission

Clarion Alley in San Francisco is only one block long and is located between Mission and Valencia Streets and 17th and 18th Streets., The street is notable for community and arts activity, including the the Clarion Alley Mural Project, the American Indian Center, and Promotoras Latinas Comunitarias de Salud. Since 1992, the alley has been covered in murals painted by the Clarion Alley Mural Project. Years ago, when I lived in the Mission on 17th Street, the back door to my 2nd floor apartment looked out onto Clarion Alley. My next door neighbors Aaron Noble and Rico 23 were founding members of the Clarion Alley Mural Project. The Cockettes were also my neighbors at 47 Clarion. Shortly after the mural project began in 1992, a dozen of my sculptural prayer sticks and totem poles were installed along the alley. They lasted several years but are now long gone. This last Monday, I walked the alley for the first in many years and photographed the murals. Here are some of my impressions taken with the camera.
