Bouquets to Art at the de Young . . . Picture-taking at the Exhibition

Early on Friday morning, Dave and I went to the Bouquets to Art 2016 at the de Young. It's the annual week-long exhibition in which more than 125 of the Bay Area’s most innovative and sought after floral designers create spectacular works of floral art in response to pieces in the museum’s permanent collection and the architecture of the building. With a pouring rain that morning, we figured the museum would be relatively quiet. That was not the case. Even in the opening hours, the place was already packed with visitors. We began our visit in the Observation Tower. At noon, I began to meander though the galleries as best I could, navigating through the crowds. Interestingly, everyone is now a photographer. With their phones. I've noticed this at other recent shows too, the Turner, the Bonnard, Keith Haring. Gone are the days of going to a show or exhibit merely to view and experience the art. For many people now, it's as much about, and maybe even more about, capturing the moment, their moment of being there, in order to share it later on Facebook, Twitter, or Instagram. These phones that have become extensions of one's self, are certainly a game-changer. All Hail to the Selfie!
