Late Monday afternoon, several large illuminated rabbits were installed at San Francisco’s Civic Center Plaza. The giant white rabbits are a public art installation by Amanda Parer entitled INTRUDE.
The two-story illuminated blow-up bunnies have been touring the world before arriving at the steps of San Francisco's City Hall. |

While most people who see the rabbits are charmed by these flop-eared visitors, for the Australian-artist Amanda Parer, they carry a serious message. When humans introduced rabbits into Australia they became an invasive species that has wreaked havoc on the environment. So, while some see these as cute bunnies, others can view them as a warning about man’s ability to alter the environment in a big way. |

To the artist, rabbits are animals of contradiction. While they often connote a furry innocence, rabbits are considered an invasive pest in the artist's native Australia, where they have caused a great imbalance to the country's natural and delicately balanced ecosystems since they were first introduced by white settlers in1788. Through INTRUDE, Parer hopes people with thoughtfully consider how humans can change and dominate the envionrment. (Taken from the sign posted at the installation) |
