My friend Ania discovered this old photo at a garage sale in Pacifica where she lives. She bought the photo for five dollars. The photo is 20 by 30 inches and was a brittle yellowed role of paper when she found it. When she first carefully unrolled it and saw the image, she knew I would want it. The photograph was made by R.J.Waters & Co. at the St. Francis Hotel in San Francisco on December 10th,1908. The image documents the Annual Dance and Supper of the San Francisco Lodge #3 B.P.O. Elks Club. This must have been a very special evening for the people in the photo, since San Francisco was still rebuilding itself after the catastrophic earthquake and fire in 1906, less than two years earlier.
