View from Goat Island, San Francisco Bay 1887

by Marius Dahigren (1844-1920)

Oil on canvas

Marius Dahigren arrived in Oakland in 1878 from Denmark.

As there was no Bay Bridge back then, Dahigren surely became acquainted with Goat Island (known today as Yerba Buena Island) while crossing back and forth by boat to his San Francisco studio.

San Francisco in July, 1849

Painted in 1891by George Henry Burgess (1830-1905)
Oil on canvas

It is the infant village put before us, from which our great city has emerged. -George Henry Burgess

This landscape portrays San Francisco in 1849, showing the wide spectrum of cultures and commerce that gave rise to the city in response to the Gold Rush. In the foreground is the intersection of Montgomery and California (the heart of today's Financial District). Ships were signaled as they entered the Golden Gate from Telegraph Hill, seen in the middle. In the left foreground is the old road to Mission Dolores, and to the right beyond the ships are the hills of the East Bay.
