VeraSphere: A Love Story in Costume

I recently received an email from a friend with news about a film that is being made about VeraSphere.

I've been photographing this group for twenty years during the LGBT Pride Parades on Market Street in San Francisco.

These photos of VeraSphere were taken over the past ten years.

VERASPHERE: A Love Story in Costume is an upcoming documentary short film. Two men both diagnosed with AIDS and little hope of a future came together in the mid 1990's and decided to create art through costuming. What started out as two people marching in elaborate costumes for the annual SF Pride Parade, quickly became a movement with 80 participants. These enormous colourful costumes are made from recycled, repurposed and found objects. This community project saved both men from losing hope.

This from the filmmaker Robert James:

"The 20 minute rough cut edited short film VeraSphere: A Love Story in Costume has caught the eyes of  local PBS station KQED.  They have seen the cut and will be showing the film for broadcast in California on the show TRULY CALIFORNIA, later in 2019.  When working with PBS, it is more of an ‘offering’ of your work to them as they pay very little, but, they reach a wide audience and we are grateful for their interest our work."

"We intend on premiering and screening at a few film festivals first this spring, and then it will air on PBS in late summer. As soon as these dates and details become known to us, we will send word out. "

"I would go on and on about the film’s storyline but this funding link  https://www.documentaries.org/verasphere here is a great page to show you how colorful and impactful our story of love, art and survival is…..and there’s a link to DONATE, if you are inspired by our work."

"I’m hitting up everyone I know with our crowd-funding pitch.
IF this is not a good time for you to consider funding support, all I ask is that you might pass it on to others for our community based story.

Thanks for taking the time to check it out.
Please  feel free to forward this to any potentially interested parties, thanks. "

"Yes, this is another plea for funding,…BUT, this story is different.  This one is about a community effort and the unique story about 2 long-term AIDS survivors in SF that chose to create an outrageous performance art troupe to give back to the people, instead of perishing to their awful circumstances.
These guys offer their art for free and have for 25 years.  PBS is a part of this and VeraSphere is forging on to bring this BEAUTIFUL story to viewers…..in TWO versions.
Everyone should see this.
Please view the little trailer and read about the new funding option below.
Goodbye Kickstarter and hello community engagement!

Thanks for taking the time to check it out.
Please feel free to forward this to any potentially interested parties, thanks."
