Monumental Reckoning in Golden Gate Park

On June 18, 2021, sculptor Dana King installed 350 ancestral sculptures at the Music Concourse in Golden Gate Park.

The sculptures encircle the empty pedestal of the Francis Scott Key Monument.

Key was a slaveholder, and the large bronze statue of Francis Scott Key was toppled by protesters last year.

Francis Scott Key, is best known for writing the lyrics of the American national anthem "The Star-Spangled Banner".

In 1619, a ship — the San Juan Bautista — set sail from Angola with an estimated 350 kidnapped Africans aboard. It was bound for Mexico as part of the burgeoning Atlantic slave trade.

See how slavery grew in the U.S. over the next two centuries.

A journey for millions.
