Impressions of Seattle Washington, Part 4

Ferry boat, Bainbridge Island, Autumn colors

I recently visited Seattle Washington and met with my brother Doug and sister-in-law Sarah.

They live in Phoenix, and their trip to Seattle was a mini-vacation celebrating their 37th year wedding anniversary.

On their anniversary, November 3rd, we took the ferry across Puget Sound, from Seattle to Bainbridge Island. We braved a cold gray day, laced with waves of sporatic rain.

Despite the weather . . . the ferry ride adventure, the views, and the autumn colors were worth it, and made their anniversary day special.

…Seattle has unleashed this weird phenomenon on the world called the coffee shop. And the coffee shop, thanks to Starbucks, is the place where socially isolated, lonely, needy people gather together to ignore one another.

Mark Driscoll

Seattle, the mild green queen: wet and willing, cedar-scented, and crowned with slough grass, her toadstool scepter tilted toward Asia, her face turned ever upward in the rain; the sovereign who washes her hands more persistently than the most fastidious proctologist.

Tom Robbins

The trip from Seattle to Bainbridge Island via ferry boat (locals refer to it merely as “the boat”) is 35 minutes. The two Washington State Ferry boats on this route are over 400 feet long, and can carry up to 200 cars and 2,500 passengers.

Seattle is beautiful. You look at the sky and it’s one of the most beautiful skies in the world, and then there’s the Puget Sound, which will hurt you, if you fall into it, but it’s also beautiful. Seattle is a city of contradictions…. Within the same city, there’s darkness and light.

As long as autumn lasts, I shall not have hands, canvas and colors enough to paint the beautiful things I see.

Vincent Van Gogh

Autumn, the year's last, loveliest smile.

William C. Bryant

Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree.

Emily Bronte

No spring nor summer beauty hath such grace as I have seen in one autumnal face.

John Donne

I notice that Autumn is more the season of the soul than of nature.

Friedrich Nietzsche

Nature gives to every time and season some beauties of its own.

Charles Dickens

Autumn burned brightly, a running flame through the mountains, a torch flung to the trees.

Faith Baldwin

Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.

Albert Camus

The most beautiful carpet is the carpet made of autumn leaves!

Mehmet Murat Ildan

How beautiful the leaves grow old. How full of light and color are their last days.

John Burroughs

When you are reluctant to change, think of the beauty of autumn.

V V Brown

Autumn carries more gold in its pocket than all the other seasons.

Jim Bishop

Life is a dream and autumn is a dream within dream!

Mehmet Murat Ildan

Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.

George Eliot

Fall has always been my favorite season. The time when everything bursts with its last beauty, as if nature had been saving up all year for the grand finale.

Lauren DeStefano

Why is it that so many of us persist in thinking that autumn is a sad season? Nature has merely fallen asleep, and her dreams must be beautiful if we are to judge by her countenance.

Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Life starts all over again when it gets crisp in the fall.

F. Scott Fitzgerald

Here in the corner attic of America, two hours’ drive from a rainforest, a desert, a foreign country, an empty island, a hidden fjord, a raging river, a glacier, and a volcano is a place where the inhabitants sense they can do no better, nor do they want to.
