Housemate and Native American artist Tom Phillips

I've recently begun archiving and cataloging the photos, sketches, documents, and other ephemera of one of my housemates, Tom Phillips. I met Tom in 1974, and knew him until he passed away in 2005. Tom, who was part Chickasaw Indian, began as a commercial artist, and became a leading and well-known painter of Western Art. But his real life-long passion, was devoted to recording through his artistic talents, the history of Native Americans, and in particular his tribe, the Chickasaws. Here is a sampling of his work.

Tom's description of his painting

Tom worked on this mural many hours every day for nine months in 1997-98.

Saint Mary's Cathdral on Geary Blvd. in San Francisco, provided Tom with a large conference room under the cathedral. That space allowed him to work on the enormous three-sectioned canvas painting.

At the time of the mural's creation, Tom was also teaching art to children at Rocky Mountain Participation Nursery School in San Francisco. This photo was taken during a field trip one afternoon.
