I received this photo from a dear friend. In the email accompying the photo he wrote:Hi Ron.I liked the last group of photos you sent. (Actually, I like all the groups you send!) I noticed that you included some old photos that you have acquired, which were very interesting. I thought I would send this photo to you as it may be of interest. It is my maternal grandparents with another couple on a hike on Mt. Tamalpais. Taken prior to the 1906 earthquake. My grandparents are the couple in the middle of the photo wearing what must have been appropriate clothes for a hike! Papa, as we called him was an immigrant from Scotland (John Dykes, Jr. ) and Nana was an immigrant from Germany (Marie Seicks Dykes) At the time of the photo, Papa was a ship’s architect with the Union Iron Works in SF. He eventually went into the ministry and was an Anglican priest. If you want to ever include the photo in a future series, feel free to use it. They eventually had 7 children, my mother being the second youngest. They lived on Mariposa street and the ’06 quake ruined their house. Papa sent Nana and four of the children (John, Alan, Florence and Marguerite) back to Germany while he looked for a place to live here. Nana was pregnant at the time so she came back with 5 kids, adding Ruth to the clan. After they got settled, two more children were born, my mother, Jessie and Julius. They lived in a house on Wisconsin street that is still there!Best regards. Tom B. |

Every normal human being (and not merely the 'artist') has an inexhaustible store of buried images in his subconscious, it is merely a matter of courage or liberating procedures ... of voyages into the unconscious, to bring pure and unadulterated found objects to light.Max Ernst |

The lightshow of an April sunsetWhat is life? It is the flash of a firefly in the night. It is the breath of a buffalo in the wintertime. It is the little shadow which runs across the grass and loses itself in the sunset.Crowfoot, Blackfoot warrior and orator |
