In 1978, I began creating posters for the Anstendig Institute, San Francisco bookstores, and special events around the city. My posters were exquisitely-cut paper collages, using copyright free illustrations from the 19th century. Once a new poster was finished, and hundreds of copies were printed, I'd fill a backpack with them, then walk the streets of San Francisco, from dusk until dawn, putting up the 11x17 inch posters with masking tape or a staple gun. In those years, I always carried my pocket-size Olympus XA camera with me. (It was for me then, what the iPhone camera is for me today.) Here are some of my nighttime photos . . . these of mannequins in store window displays, that were taken in the quiet wee hours in the dead of night when I was out hanging posters. |
