Half Moon Bay Halloween

On Monday, Dave and I drove south to Half Moon Bay.
Here are some of the photos from Monday’s road trip.

Half Moon Bay is located approximately 25 miles south of San Francisco.
The Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival is an annual festival held in the coast side community of Half Moon Bay for one weekend during pumpkin harvest season. It is one of the oldest and largest local festivals in California.

The Half Moon Bay Art and Pumpkin Festival began in 1971.

With an abundance of pumpkin patches in the area, the small community organized an old-fashioned harvest-style pumpkin festival.
The annual event is held in October. Columbus Day Monday is the Safeway World Champion Pumpkin Weigh-in contest.

The popular event attracts more than 200,000 people to this rural community.

The first Americans arrived in this area in the 1850s.
The Mexican settlement known as Spanishtown, a commercial center for the rancheros, was called "Halfmoon" by these Anglos; the bay itself was named "Halfmoon" due to its shape.
In 1867 the local post office was identified as "Halfmoon Bay", and the spelling was changed to Half Moon Bay in 1905.

At the north edge of the bay is the big wave surf area, Mavericks, off Pillar Point, where surfers challenge waves over 50 feet tall

Half Moon Bay State Beach is well known for its rare Western Snowy Plover colony.

During the 1920s the gentle beaches of Half Moon Bay were ideally suited for the needs of the bootlegger.
Rum Ships cruised off shore, unloading millions of dollars worth of illegal booze across Half Moon Bay where Francis Beach was a perfect spot for unloading the cargo.
