Men Working on I-Beam 1935
“This is an I-bar, one of many that was joined on to the center anchorage.
These are attached to an A-frame midway between San Francisco and Yerba Buena Island. . . .
Every trip we made, we would look and wonder at the progress of the bridge knowing full well that the days of commuting and the whole life-style was bound to change.”

Bridge Worker 1934
“That was Hank just sitting there eating an apple. He’s one of those fellows who had worked on jobs all over the country.
They were in a class by themselves. They called themselves professional bridgemen, not steelworkers or ironworkers.
They’re bridgeworkers because that’s their specialty.”

Quitting Time 1935
“Deep in contemplation, a crew goes home after hearing the news of a fatality. It was a tradition to quit for the day when a death occurred.
In the background you can see the catwalk and center anchorage and towers five and six. The center anchorage was called Devil’s Fall. The man in the middle with the gray cap [later] lost his life. “

Cable Spinners 1936
“These are two cable spinners on the Golden Gate Bridge.
When the strand has so many wires in it, then it is combined to a main cable. “

Cable Saddle 1935
“ When I first got to this spot, the ropes were hanging straight across and I couldn’t get a clear view of that far tower.
I asked one of the bridgemen if he would loosen them for me. I did not walk out there because it was a very slick, greasy surface.
He found a way to untie them on the side. The ropes were put there for someone in case they slipped.”

Men working on I-Beam (Bay Bridge-San Francisco) 1935
“I was just awestruck with the view and watching the men work.
They were climbing down over the side, climbing on diagonal pieces or on the top of the rivet heads.
It just scared me watching them. The drama was overpowering. “
