Dr. Jane Goodall in San Francisco

Jane Goodall was in San Francisco last week, speaking at conferences, attending events, and promoting the new National Geographic documentary about her titled, JANE.

The film by award-winning director Brett Morgen has been receiving rave reviews.

The music is by Philip Glass.

She stayed at the Fairmont Hotel, a block away from where I work. I met with Jane on Sunday, hours before she left San Francisco.

The view of San Francisco from the Kashmir Room in the Fairmont Hotel where National Geographic had Jane staying while in San Francisco. Jane had to keep the windows closed for most of her stay because of the thick smoke and ash from the wild fires burning in Sonoma and Napa. When I shot this photo on Sunday, it was the first clear day in a seven days.

“One of the best documentaries of 2017. An astonishing accomplishment. Morgen is setting the bar for profile documentaries and changing the rules for his field.”

National Geographic Film about Jane Goodall

About the Film

Drawing from over 100 hours of never-before-seen footage that has been tucked away in the National Geographic archives for over 50 years, award-winning director Brett Morgen tells the story of JANE, a woman whose chimpanzee research challenged the male-dominated scientific consensus of her time and revolutionized our understanding of the natural world.

Set to a rich orchestral score from legendary composer Philip Glass, the film offers an unprecedented, intimate portrait of Jane Goodall — a trailblazer who defied the odds to become one of the world’s most admired conservationists.

From: Jane, the Movie

“Few films this year offer up such lush and formal components. Morgen has made a film of deep emotional beauty. Required viewing for anyone seeking a classic in the making.”

On October 9, the film was shown to a crowd of 16,000 at the Hollywood Bowl.

"With a thrilling musical score from Oscar nominated composer Philip Glass this film from director Brett Morgen should be a prime Oscar contender not only for Documentary Feature, but also Original Music Score, and perhaps Film Editing"

"One of the highlights of the recent Toronto International Film Festival"

“Transcends the boundaries of both nature films and biographies. Its epic elements of adventure, romance, and spiritual connection possess a sweep equal to any narrative film. A wondrous, moving, and truly stirring portrait that puts us right there with Goodall to share in her discoveries, propelled by the majestic sounds of Philip Glass. This is a truly stirring legacy portrait.”

"Set to an almost overwhelmingly emotional original score by Philip Glass, this is a wondrous and moving account of a remarkable life that puts us right there with Goodall"

"JANE may be neither the first nor the last film on the pioneering British primatologist, but it will likely stand as the definitive portrait."

"She's an inspiring subject, honored here in a truly stirring legacy portrait."
