More photos of The Jars Project: the 40 year work in progress

Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom ordered all Californians to shelter-in-place because of COVID-19.

I've gone out of the house only twice in the past twelve days.

With a lot of free time on my hands, I've been staying inside and working on the jars. Here are photos of the jars that I shot in the last two days.

The photos were taken with an iPhone 11 Pro Max.

'The Jars' is an ongoing work in progress that is now over 40 years old. There are over 1,200 glass gallon jars that are filled with things, and topped with sculptural headdresses.

Having worked in San Francisco restaurants for 45 years, I've always asked the bartenders to save for me the gallon jars from martini olives and maraschino cherries.

A particular focus these days is to label and catalogue each jar. To date, I've now labeled 513 jars, out of the 1,200 that I've collected.

The jars are my personal histories, stories, memories, time-capsules, and familiars.

The catalog number on each label refers to more information about the jar in a Microsoft word document on my computer.

The bird's nest was found inside the sculptural bell tower that stands in the front yard. Over the years, there have been several nests built, with babies that were hatched and raised on the tower.

On June 5, 2009, Hana Baba was the co-host of "CrossCurrents", the evening newsmagazine on KALW Public Radio 91.7FM in San Francisco (an NPR station). She came to the house and interviewed me, and our talk aired on June 15th of that year.
