This year, San Francisco's Golden Gate Park celebrates its 150 Anniversary

On Saturday April 4th, Golden Gate Park was supposed to have its birthday party with an estimated 150,000 in attendance.

Because of the Coronavirus pandemic, and California's shelter-in-place mandate, the party has been postponed until later this year.

Until then, San Franciscans and Bay Area residents have been invited to celebrate the park's creation on-line.

To visit the official web site, click here: https://www.goldengatepark150.com

As my own salute to Golden Gate Park's 150 Year Anniversary, here's a collection of photos taken in the park over the past 20 years.

All of these photos were taken with a Canon EOS-1Ds, except for the ones of the ferris wheel.

Pictures of the ferris wheel were recently taken with an iPhone 11 Pro Max.

This observation ferris wheel is only 60% completed. It was meant to be part of Golden Gate Park's 150 Anniversary Celebration, but because of the Coronavirus it now sits unfinished in the Music Concourse between the de Young Museum and the California Academy of Sciences.

The California Academy of Sciences in Golden Gate Park is a research institute and natural history museum in San Francisco, California. It is among the largest museums of natural history in the world, housing over 46 million specimens.

In front of the de Young sits Poème de la vigne (Poem of the Vine) (1877–1878, cast in 1882), a monumental bronze vase by Gustave Doré (French, 1832–1883) that has been a feature of the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco’s two institutions since 1895.

In 2008, a blown glass and neon tower by Dale Chihuly was installed in front of the De Young Museum in Golden Gate Park. Titled Saffron Tower, it stood in the very center of the Pool of Enchantment. During the summer in 2008, an exhibition of Chihuly’s work opened on June 14th and ended on September 28, 2008.

Poème de la vigne, was originally intended to be the centerpiece of a display on winemaking at the Exposition Universelle of 1878 in Paris. At 17ft. tall, it was a major artistic and technical undertaking. Its allegorical narrative depicts mythological figures associated with the rites of Bacchus (the Roman god of wine), including Silenus (Bacchus’s drunken attendant) and Diana (goddess of the hunt, associated with woodlands and wild animals). It further employs an abundance of smaller putti, satyrs, bacchantes, and creatures that menace the precious grapes, including a giant spider, a rat, several snakes, and a horde of insects.

In the mid-1960s, artists, activists, writers, and musicians converged on Haight-Ashbury with hopes of creating a new social paradigm. By 1967, the neighborhood would attract as many as 100,000 young people from all over the nation. The neighborhood became ground zero for their activities, and nearby Golden Gate Park their playground.

The Pool of Enchantment which has been greeting visitors at the entrance to the De Young since 1917, is by the famous San Francisco sculptor Earl Cummings. It consists of two pumas and an Indian boy playing a flute. Cummings was a protégé of Phoebe Apperson Hearst (mother of William Randolph Hearst). She financed his studies in Paris. Cummings studied as a pupil of Douglas Tilden at the Mark Hopkins Art Institute (the former Hopkins mansion. Douglas Tilden is one of California’s and San Francisco’s most famous sculptors. In his day Tilden was know as the Michelangelo of the West.) Cummings eventually became a leading light in San Francisco’s artistic and social circles. Cummings exhibited frequently at the Bohemian Club and after the catastrophic destruction of the city in1906 was appointed San Francisco’s first Parks Commissioner. He served on that post for 32 years and his influence is still seen all over San Francisco in the display of many well-know and public sculptures and monuments.

Jewel City: Art from San Francisco's Panama-Pacific International Exposition

October 17, 2015 – January 10, 2016

The year 2015 marked the centennial of the Panama-Pacific International Exposition (PPIE), San Francisco world’s fair that celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal and the city’s reconstruction following the great earthquake of 1906. The grand exposition covered 76 city blocks and boasted national and international pavilions showcasing innovation, industry, and the arts. At the heart of the PPIE was one of the most ambitious art exhibitions ever presented in the United States, encompassing more than 11,000 paintings, sculptures, prints, and photographs, in addition to a significant array of public murals and monuments. To mark this anniversary, Jewel City revisited this vital moment in the inauguration of San Francisco as the West Coast’s cultural epicenter. The landmark exhibition at the de Young reassembled more than 200 works by major American and European artists, most of which were on display at this defining event.

The Portals of the Past (Ruins of the Towne Residence, California Street) 1907

A recurring subject for Willard Worden was the surviving entryway to a Nob Hill mansion destroyed in the earthquake of 1906 and relocated to Golden Gate Park in 1909. Called the Portals of the Past, the ruin served as both a monument to the city’s recent tragedy and a symbol of its perseverance.
