Nothing Like It In The World by Stephen Ambrose, first published in 2000 by Simon and Schuster, is also a very good book about the building of the first transcontinental railroad. The driving of the final spike on May 10th, 1869 at Promontory Summit in Utah was a decisive moment for this country.  On that afternoon, out in the middle of nowhere, a confident and ambitious young America, fresh out of the Civil War,  took a giant step over an unseen threshold, and entered into the earliest beginnings of the approaching Modern Age.  RH
