In 1915 the Portal of the Past was displayed at the Panama Pacific International Exposition (PPIE).
The Fair celebrated the opening of the Panama Canal and the rebirth of San Francisco following the catastrophic earthquake and fire just nine years before.  After the Fair, Towne’s widow gave the doorway to the City of San Francisco and it now resides alongside Lloyd’s Lake on John Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park.
